Shopping Travel used to be considered just a brief extension or even a fun afterthought when traveling together. But quickly, (especially with the rise of the Girlfriend Getaway) destinations and travelers alike realized that you could build an entire, fun, experiential itinerary around the world’s top shopping destinations.
For instance, you can focus on high-end one day, then off bargain-hunting in the same city the next. Follow that up with a trip to a giant outlet or even better the factory where the goods are produced and you have the makings for a diverse and exciting shopping travel trip. Don’t forget to shop for food, wine, and jewelry too! We’ve taken a look at some places around the world where you can definitely make an entire trip out of shopping the streets and alleys and still have enough stores left to do it all again next year!
Milan, Italy
La Dolce Vita (The Sweet Life) starts here in the fashion capital of Milan. The northern Italian city really is one of the world’s premier shopping destinations. This place makes Beverly Hills look like Chuck-E-Cheese. Many of the leading, modern trends in fashion begin in Milin. Take your time and browse the glitzy windows of Milan’s flagship design houses, the temple of Armani, Versace and D&G.
Montreal, Quebec
Montreal is the Canadian shopping capital. Travel shoppers of all types will love every nook and cranny of Montreal. From the Marché Jean-Talon farmers market to the mid-range hip shops and department stores on rue Ste-Catherine, to the more edgy, trend setting fashions of rues St-Laurent and St-Denis, to the lavish luxury boutiques on rue Sherbrooke.
West Palm Beach, Florida
AKA Rodeo Drive in Bikinis – West Palm’s Worth Avenue brings the bling with glistening upscale boutiques, like Chanel, Hermes, Cartier, Louis Vuitton (buy a bag here to bring all of your clothes back home) and Gucci. City Place will suit you more if you’re traveling on a budget but it is still very nice, and its 80-odd shops have helped modernize and re-monetize West Palm’s again bustling downtown area.
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Latin America’s shopping capital offers one of a kind, unforgettable quality and experiences along its grand boulevards. Here shopping is as much a sport as bull fighting. Patio Bullrich aand Galleria Pacifico are high-end malls, pouring over with light, airy and one-of-a-kind Argentine fashions. Purchase fabulous shoes, bags and other leather items (what Argentine is known for) for great prices throughout the city.
Amsterdam
Small designer shops with quality goods are everywhere in an Amsterdam city, but the Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) area, between Prinses Gracht and the Singel, is noted for their outstanding goods. This is a great place to browse boutiques, galleries, antique shops and designer stores but may be a bit more priced for the tourists. Bargains will be found to the west in the Jordaan, with its fun and colorful studios and specialty shops that have it all. If you’re looking for a bargain in Amsterdam, head for the huge daily outdoor flea market at Waterlooplein which has about 300 stalls selling clothes and fun items. Be sure to talk with the locals here too. Nearly everyone speaks English so you’ll be able to get in and easily experience the shopping sites and sounds of this great and fun city.
Of course you can see the main sites and enjoy the cuisine of your shopping city too, provided you have the strength left. All shop, no drop, can’t stop!
What city do you love to travel to most for incredible shopping with your friends? Dubai? London?
