The Amazon Jungle

Fishing, shamans, caimans, and blow darts

Ready to experience some wild nature? Consider heading deep into the Amazon jungle. The Amazon River, the largest river in the world, originates in the Andes Mountains of Peru. Here you can fish for piranha, take a zip line through a "sea of green" virgin rainforest, swim with pink dolphins, and find out who among you has the best blow dart skills, all while staying at a nature lodge in the midst of it all. You can even gain an audience with a local Shaman to learn about medicinal plants.

During the day, rapid excursion launches put you in tributary streams of black water in search of wild animal life, where you'll also have a chance to do some fishing. Nocturnal excursions searching for bats, capybara, black caiman, poison frogs, and an infinite number of other species provide more eye-opening adventure.

The weather in the Amazon is hot and sticky, and the wet season lasts from around November to May, with the river reaching its highest point in May. The rainy season is the best time to encounter rare wildlife. Regardless of when you go, though, a trip to the Peruvian Amazon will provide you and your friends with a truly unforgettable experience.

Those seeking to extend the adventure even further should plan a side trip to the Apurimac River, which flows into the Amazon and is the site of some the world's best whitewater rafting. Here, you can raft a variety of serious rapids set amongst dramatic canyons and beaches.
