Explore American history and innovative museums

Boston is alive with things to do for all ages, from exploring important American historical sites along the Freedom Trail to activities at modern attractions such as its top-notch aquarium, museums, and a nearby Six Flags amusement park. It's easy and inexpensive to get around Boston by foot with the user-friendly public transportation system, called the T. Hop. Here are some of the top family-oriented attractions.

Boston Children's Museum has been building innovative, meaningful, and fun exhibits for over ninety years. This museum focuses on hands-on engagement and learning through experience. The museum has inspired many other children's museums across the country and is designed for families. The exhibits focus on science, culture, environmental awareness, health & fitness, and the arts.

Visit Bunker Hill, Paul Revere's house and 14 other significant spots pivotal to the American Revolution on the 2.5 mile, red-brick, Freedom Trail. Walk the trail on your own for free, or perhaps with a guide dressed in 18th-century garb. The Freedom Trail is a one-of-a-kind collection of museums, churches, meeting houses, parks, a ship, and historic markers that tell the story of the American Revolution and beyond.

Boston Common is the oldest public park in the nation, and is a great place for a family picnic. There are many statues situated throughout the park. There's a bandstand for concerts and theatrical productions, and large special events are often held here during the warm months. In the winter months, the Frog Pond has public ice skating.

The picturesque Harbor Islands of Boston, a National Park area, is home to wildlife refuges, and lighthouses. There are Family Fun days throughout the summer with interactive arts and crafts, story reading, and other activities. Ranger programs are also fun for the kids and the Boston Children's Theater often performs in the islands as well. Families can depart from Boston's Long Warf and travel to the Harbor Islands via passenger ferries.
