Beach Vacations

Relaxation is not far away, even in these popular beach areas

The family beach vacation is one that every generations can enjoy. It offers a great opportunity to integrate grandparents into your travel plans. Most look for family beach getaways that are tourist-friendly but not overcrowded, with the ability to do as much or as little as the family desires while on vacation.

Florida is a strong draw with its beautiful sand, clear water, easy access, and lots of activities away from the beach. Orlando is a very popular destination for families, with its theme parks and bustling beachfront. Nearby Paradise Beach is less crowded than other local beaches and offers clear water. For activities and restaurants, make the short drive from there to Melbourne or Cocoa Beach. Amelia Island, just 20 minutes from Jacksonville, offers nature tours, bike rentals, kids camps, and boardwalks built out into the marsh. St. Augustine is historic, kid-friendly and has a beautiful beach. There are carriage rides, alligator fames, a beautiful lighthouse, as well as great golf (and miniature golf).

San Diego has beautiful weather year-round, so your family can enjoy great beaches nearly any time of the year along seventy miles of coastline. Just over the bridge from San Diego is the tree-lined, quaint beach community of Coronado. Along with the small-town atmosphere, Coronado is small enough to explore by foot or tram. The beaches of Coronado also are a great place to whale watch from December to February. San Diego has great family-oriented local attractions such as the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld San Diego, San Diego Wild Animal Park and Legoland.

More off the beaten track is North Carolina's Outer Banks, stretching for 130 miles along the Atlantic coast. Duck, owing its name to the many families of fowl who stop here during migration, has a slogan of "a secret worth keeping" — though more families are apparently finding out about it. Duck's isolation and its neatly built rental homes make it ideal for families. The beach is the main attraction, as wide lanes of soft sand are ideal for walks and manageable surf is ideal for boogie boarding, body surfing and swimming.
