Family Hawaii Vacations
Apply Hawaiian family concepts to your vacation
One of the distinctive features of Hawaiian culture is the important role of the family or 'ohana. The Hawaiian family is based on bonds of acceptance, support, leisure time, and shared obligation across the generations. With so much to do in Hawaii, it's good to keep these concepts in mind when planning your multi-family or multi-generational family trip. Consider which accommodations would best serve everyone's needs — staying on the beach in a Waikiki resort, renting a condo on Maui, sharing a Bed and Breakfast in Volcano National Park, or even camping in one of the seven ocean side beach parks on Kauai. Some families have success getting the kids involved in the brainstorming and research process.
Decide which activities are best for time spent together. Consider hiking or walking a lush jungle or mountain trail to waterfalls. Perhaps a family surf lesson or hula class will create a unique bonding experience. Remember also to plan for diversity; some may want to get up early to pursue activities, while others generations may want to sleep late and focus on relaxing by the pool or on the beach. Try to anticipate these differences, and do as the Hawaiians do, by valuing the relationship over the desired activity. Plan specific time together and free time when people can go and do whatever they please. Schedule some of your time on Hawaii just for the 'ohana to enjoy the island(s) together.
