Cozumel
World-class barrier reef diving just off the island shore
For groups looking to play, enjoy, and relax in a beautiful sea, the laid-back island of Cozumel provides the pristine beauty of the Riviera Maya at a gentler pace. A short boat ride from Playa Del Carmen, Cozumel is a hub of water activities, with windsurfing, sailing, surfing, jet skiing and water-skiing offering days of fun in the water. You can walk or kayak along miles of crystalline beaches and see very few other people.
Divers consider Cozumel as one of the finest dive destinations in the Western Hemisphere. Nearly 80,000 visitors annually are drawn to the world's second longest barrier reef just beyond the shore of Cozumel, featuring a multitude of colors and marine life. Jacque Cousteau filmed here showing visibility to 200 feet, over 30 kilometers of reefs, and more than 200 species of tropical fish.
Many of Cozumel's best snorkeling spots are close to shore. The western side of the island has dozens of great snorkel sites like Chankanaab Bay. Playa del Sol, Playa San Francisco, Playa Maya and Playa Palancar all offer water sport equipment rentals and are great beaches for hanging out. The more dramatic eastern (windward) shore is pounded by waves and winds, although there are some picturesque inlets and bays safe for swimming. South of San Miguel there are several beach clubs offering natural seafront dining, beach chairs and palapas.
The island also has its share of Mayan ruins hidden in the jungles that can be explored by car, bike or foot. Eco-adventures, exotic animal life, and visiting unexcavated ruins make great day trips. From May to September, you can see giant see turtles laying their eggs as well as view the island's wide variety of exotic migratory bird life.
Above, below, or even out of the water, your group will have a fulfilling vacation enjoying the waters in beautiful Cozumel.
