Waikiki With 3 Boys

View from Diamond Head

We needed a week on the beach. We also needed some activities. With 3 boys ranging in age from 8 to 19 (plus the 19 year old's girlfriend) it could have been challenging to find things we all wanted to do. We took surfing lessons, rented a convertible to go around the island, went on an underwater submarine tour (so the littlest didn't have to learn to scuba) and hiked to the top of Diamond Head. We also spent a lot of time swimming, reading, resting and eating. All in all, it was a terrific beach getaway.

Tips and Advice:

  • Rent a car only for the day(s) you need it. Honolulu public transportation is easy and cheap. The hotels usually charge for parking a car and you'll want to spend most of the time near the beach.
  • Take spray sunscreen. It's much easier to apply with the salt and sand and facilitates quick re-applies.
  • Ask the hotel front desk if any guests have left behind boogie boards or floaties. A lot of families buy them there and don't want to take them home.
  • If you decided to hike Diamond Head take lots of water and go first thing in the morning. There's little to no shade on the very steep hike, but more than worth the views.
