Mammoth Mountain

Lots of sun and snow, remote ski getaway

Mammoth

Ski groups from Southern California have long known the joy of skiing at Mammoth Mountain. It's a 5-hour drive from Los Angeles, but it blows away the skiing in the San Bernardino Mountains and is closer than Tahoe. Mammoth is now a whole lot more accessible to everyone, thanks to

daily non-stop flights

between Los Angeles and Mammoth via Horizon Air.

Mammoth Mountain's reputation as a destination ski resort is growing. The mountain offers 3,000+ feet of vertical, 150 trails, 3,500 acres of terrain, 400" of annual snowfall, and over

300 days of sunshine

. Mammoth has also become more of a destination town in its own right, with lots to do off the slopes. There are dozens of restaurants (try

Angels

for ribs,

Roberto's Mexican Cafe

for casual Mexican, or upscale

Petra's Wine Bar

), plenty of nightclubs in town, plus shopping and spa options. You'll find exploring Mammoth much easier if you

rent a car

. There is free shuttle service to the mountain, but the town is spread out and wasn't designed for pedestrians.

To avoid crowds on the mountain on a weekend, try heading to the six-pack

Cloud Nine Express

for a variety of expansive and quality terrain. If the crowds are overwhelming, consider

June Mountain

, its 20 miles away, has over 2,500 feet of vertical and you can ski with your Mammoth lift ticket.

Mammoth has also joined a growing trend by offering

ski camps just for women

. These full-service classes are taught by women and take into account ability, free time to ski with friends, and apres-ski activities.
