map We are excited to integrate

Google maps with local search

in the Group Trip Planner. The map is positioned to the right of the day-by-day itinerary on the Itinerary tab for any group trip. Use the search to establish a default location (your destination city, hotel, etc.) and then

quickly locate nearby points of interest

such as restaurants, shopping, and museums. In fact, you can search any keyword(s) - try pizza, ice cream, parks, spa, brewery, or whatever you're into. Finding, saving, and mapping itinerary items is fast, fun, and easy. Anyone in the group can contribute to the itinerary and/or review it with the map.

Note that Google currently supports local search for the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada, and much of continental Europe, though some search results are available for other locations.

We also updated our

, which now incorporates timely articles from the Group Travel Guide, and made improvements to the page layout in all of the Group Travel Guide and Deals sections.

The new Poll tab in the Group Trip Planner replaces the Date Poll tab. Trip leaders can

conduct a poll to quickly get input on any question

, such as when to go, where to go, where to stay, how much to budget, or any other question of interest. The group will be notified by email when the poll is created. The trip leader can set a date for a reminder email to get sent automatically to those who haven't responded.

We announced the winners of our Best Group Vacation contest. Thanks to everyone who participated. There were a number of great entries, making it difficult to choose the Grand Prize Winner, but it has been really fun to read the shared group trip experiences!

Best Group Vacation Contest

We're celebrating the launch of shared group travel experiences on Triporama with an exciting contest! Triporama will award a group the chance to create a professional-quality book chronicling their travel together to the one who submits the

best shared group travel experience

by July 25, 2008. All qualified entries will be published on the Triporama web site for sharing with friends and other travelers. See our contest page for details.

In addition to uploading a photo of yourself (see below), you can now

create your own nickname

for use in the Group Trip Planner (in your profile). Your comments and messages will attributed to the nickname that you choose. You can even create a different nickname for each group trip, if you want. In any case, just as with your photo, your nickname is shared only with people in your group(s). The trip leader can set up a nickname for anyone on the trip who hasn't established their own (which each person can override).

The photos and nicknames of everyone in the group are part of the new

group profile

page in the Group Trip Planner. This page also shows everyone's current RSVP status. To access it, click the link in "The Group" section on the group trip home page.

You can now

upload a photo of yourself

(or your avatar, if you prefer) in your profile. Your photo is visible only to people within your group(s).

We're happy to bring a more personal touch to the Group Trip Planner. Stay tuned, we'll be adding more fun features shortly!

We have enhanced Topics functionality in the Group Trip Planner based on user feedback,

making group discussions easier

on important issues such as where to go, where to stay, activities, and any other topic of interest to the group. Any group participant can add a new comment at any time or update an existing comment. Those posting a comment have the option to automatically send their comment to the group by e-mail to ensure everyone's in the loop on the trip planning effort. On each topic page, the most recently added/updated comments are displayed at the top so it's easy for everyone to read the discussion.

The Group Trip Planner now has group e-mail notifications on polls as well. If the poll is created with the new group trip form, the notification is automatically included in the group trip e-mail invitations.

We have strengthened the notifications and alerts in the Group Trip Planner with the following additions:

  • New topics notification - those entering a new topic can have an e-mail notification sent to the group, if desired
  • Poll reminders can now be re-sent and reminder dates modified by the trip leader
  • Alerts (displayed on the group trip home page) now include alerts for new topics and topics with new comments

We launched a new Group Travel Guide section for Weekend Getaways, which includes recommended destinations, trip ideas, deals, and advice for weekend getaways with friends and family.

We welcome Enterprise Rent-a-Car as our featured provider for the new section!
